There has been an impressive rollout of vegan cheeses in Northern California this year. Let restaurants know that Sysco carries many of them, so do places like Restaurant Depot. Retailers Whole Foods and The Co-Op each have several in stock.
Kite Hill, Miyoko, Daiya, Follow Your Heart, Cultured Kitchen and more all provide a range of flavors. Buy a few and do a taste test.
Miyoko’s Artisan Vegan Life — she is the goddess of making vegan cheese. Some are very simple recipes, some are a several day process. You can buy her gourmet cheeses in the Coop and Whole Foods. Her newest book (she has many) is The Homemade Vegan Pantry and has extensive lists and “base recipes” for sauces and such to keep on hand with great explanations. Here is her blog, as well.

As of February, 2016 soy yogurt has reappeared (Nancy’s) as well as a number of almond, cashew, and coconut based products.
