This Japanese eatery is popular and always packed (date night), has outdoor seating, and has enough plant-based items to make a filling meal. Ask your server for guidance in case there are hidden ingredients. (They cannot confirm if inari soy skins are plant-based.) Shared fryer. 500 1st St.

Thai eatery serving creative noodle dishes, curries, stir fries & specialty cocktails. Red 88 has a well-marked menu and many items can be made vegan if you ask. Their knowledgeable staff can make recommendations! They do catering and are one of the only places open for a late meal. Full bar. 223 G St.

A Japanese hot pot restaurant where you order a broth (2 vegan options) and get a platter of veggies and tofu that you cook in the broth on your table. It is a fun way to eat and a warm, healthy meal! 500 1st St.

Thai restaurant with a small bar and seating in back with a few tables out on the street. The printed menus by the cashier have dots marking what can be made vegan by request. 117 E St. 

Dah Bao

Serves Chinese/Taiwanese street food and fragrant tea concoctions. There are several items which can make a meal: Fried tofu, green onion pancake (ask for vegan dipping sauce), pancake with curry to dip into, and squash curry (order with eggplant, tofu or split and have both). They said they are considering adding a few items. So let them know you are vegan and ask what is new. They serve some non-dairy teas and several matcha drinks with non-dairy (oat) option by request. 2880 5th St.

Nami Sushi 

One year Nami did an amazing spread of rolls not on the menu. The chefs may be able to be flexible, ask nicely for them to recommend vegan items. They can do catering with extensive vegan items. 2880 5th Street

Pho Yummy!

Pho Yummy is just that, yummy pho and a handful of Vietnamese appetizers. Same owners as Pho Tasty (301 G St) and similar vegan options. They have vegan broth option with vegetables and tofu and the spring rolls with tofu can be vegan. 229 G St.

Has well-marked plant-based options. There are several appetizers and most entrees (ala carte or Thalis) in the Vegetarian section are vegan. But wait! A chain from the Bay Area with an owner who went to UC Davis. Sandwiches galore – about 20 huge subs that are vegan or vegetarian and can be made vegan, and several kinds of bread and sauces. They use several brands of faux meats (like Gardein and Tofurky) and a vegan mayo that is yummy. The website has Davis tab with the local menu. F St between 2nd/3rd.

Inexpensive, popular with students, and is a build-your-own type of service. Tell staff you are vegan and they will change gloves, and use Daiya, only one sauce is ok, and make sure to remind them to use a clean pizza cutter at the end. 212 F St/2nd

All of the Sudwerk beers were confirmed vegan a few years ago. The Dock is very popular in the evenings, there is frequently a live band with relaxed outdoor seating in what was part of the parking lot. It’s fun. The restaurant adjacent has appetizers that can be ordered without cheese (note, shared fryer) and a hummus plate.
